Our Story

The Black Educator Advocates Network (BEAN) was founded in 2020 by Black educators in Los Angeles, California, to address the critical challenges of recruiting and retaining Black educators across the city. Since 2016, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has experienced an annual loss of approximately 100 Black teachers, totaling a decline of 700 Black teachers over seven years. This trend is concerning, especially given that LAUSD, despite being one of the higher-paying districts, is witnessing a significant exodus of Black educators.

In 2023, BEAN conducted a comprehensive survey of Black educators throughout Los Angeles. The findings highlighted that workplace environment is a key barrier to retention. BEAN believes that when Black educators are recognized and empowered as leaders within schools that implement anti-racist practices and policies, their presence in classrooms will increase, leading to improved outcomes for Black students.
