Aya Education Coalition

Aya Education Coalition consists of organizations and advocates committed to strengthening the Black educator pipeline and Black student achievement across California. Derived from the Adinkra symbol meaning "endurance" and "resourcefulness," Aya embodies the spirit of resilience and innovation that drives our coalition’s work.

Research underscores the impact Black educators have on all students, including improved academic outcomes, higher college aspirations, and a more inclusive and affirming school environment. However, Black educators remain critically underrepresented, with fewer than 12,000 Black teachers employed in the state during the 2020-2021 school year. Our coalition unites organizations from both northern and southern california to address the barriers impeding on the Black educator pipeline through legislative action.

Our 2024-2025 Policy Platform consists of the following recommendations

Deeper Data Transparency

Reduced standardized testing barriers for teaching credentialing pathways

Reduced barriers to recruitment and sustainability i.e affordable housing

Reducing harm to Black educator layoffs
