California Black Educator Survey Reveals Critical Insights for Retaining Black Educators

In the first annual survey conducted by the Black Educator Advocates Network (BEAN), new findings highlight the vital steps necessary to retain Black educators in California. Conducted in Fall 2023, the survey offers direct insights from Black educators, underscoring the urgency of creating conditions conducive to their success and growth in the profession.

The brief report titled, “What Schools Must do to Retain Black Educators",  highlights the experiences and perspectives of Black educators regarding their workplace and school culture. Key findings reveal that while nearly half of the Black educators report their schools demonstrate a commitment to building an anti-racist culture, only 21% feel these schools have effectively implemented protocols and programs to support Black educators and students adequately. Survey responses also emphasize the need for more Black teachers, with 64% of respondents advocating for a school leader committed to creating a culturally affirming and inclusive environment.

Founder and CEO, Jalisa Evans said this: “We created the report to address the broken pipeline for Black educators at every stage in California. Our team is particularly interested in the experience of current Black educators. The survey was designed to directly capture the experiences of Black educators teaching our students. The report highlights the survey findings as a call to action. It’s clear that while some schools are making strides towards inclusivity, much work remains in ensuring that our Black educators feel valued, heard, and supported. We exist to do just that.”

To provide deeper insights into these compelling findings, BEAN is excited to announce an upcoming webinar titled What Schools Must do to Retain Black Educators. Scheduled for February 1st at 11 am PT, this virtual event will feature a panel of grass top organizations, and education stakeholders across the state of California. The webinar will offer attendees the opportunity to delve into the nuances of the data and include a call to action for decision makers across the state.
